Are you curious about how affiliate marketing works and whether it could be the right fit for you? If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the idea or worried it might not work for your blog or audience, you’re not alone—I’ve been there too.
When I first started exploring affiliate marketing back in 2018, it felt like this big, mysterious thing that other bloggers were somehow making work, while I was stuck on the sidelines. But over time…
I learned that affiliate marketing, when done right, isn’t just a way to make money—it’s a way to serve your audience while creating (somewhat) passive income.
As a web designer, I’ve worked with content creators and businesses in all kinds of niches, from personal finance, travel, photography, food blogs, non-profits, coaching, and more. I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t.
Beyond client work, I’ve also built and sold a blog for a 5-figure price tag. That experience taught me how to turn a website into a profitable, sustainable asset. Today, I run a 6-figure web design business, and the strategies that worked for me then are the ones I’m using to this day and sharing with you now.
In this post, I’ll help you understand exactly what affiliate marketing is, why it works, and how you can use it to create income—whether you’re launching a new website, reviving one that’s not performing, or looking for fresh ideas to grow your revenue.
Let’s start with the basics…

What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is a way to make money by recommending products or services you genuinely believe in to your audience.
Here’s the gist: you share a unique affiliate link or coupon code, and when someone makes a purchase through your link, you earn a commission—usually a percentage of the sale or a fixed amount.
Think of it like recommending a great movie to a friend—if they go see the movie and like it, you’d get rewarded for making the suggestion.
It’s the same idea with affiliate marketing: you’re connecting your audience with products or services they need and earning a commission as a thank-you for your recommendation.
For example, let’s say you’re passionate about at-home fitness and want to share all the equipment you used to build out your home gym.
You could join affiliate programs for the brands you love—like your favorite dumbbells, resistance bands, or treadmill—and create a blog post, YouTube video, or social media post highlighting how you use them.
When someone clicks on your affiliate link and makes a purchase, you earn a commission. It’s that simple!
Why the affiliate marketing business model works
Affiliate marketing is a smart income strategy because it benefits everyone involved: you, the site owner; your audience; and the brands you partner with.
For site owners
Affiliate marketing makes it easy to monetize by sharing a company’s products or services you genuinely believe in without the hassle of creating or managing your own products. No inventory, customer service, or shipping logistics to worry about. Just your unique voice and a trusted connection with your audience.
It’s also incredibly scalable. You can create content that keeps earning affiliate commissions long after it’s published with little upkeep. As your platform grows, so does your ability to recommend products or services that align with your audience’s evolving needs.
Plus, it’s flexible. Affiliate offers can fit seamlessly into blog posts, emails, or social media pages in a way that feels authentic and natural, allowing you to share recommendations in a way that works for you and your audience (and not in a pushy or salesy kind of way).
For your audience
Affiliate marketing helps your audience discover solutions they might not have found on their own. People trust your recommendations because they follow you for your expertise, experience, and perspective.
When you promote something you’ve personally used and love, it adds valuable information to their lives—whether that’s saving time, improving a skill, or solving a problem. This authenticity builds trust, making your audience more likely to act on your suggestions.

For brands
Brands love affiliate marketing because it increases brand awareness and connects them with content creators who can showcase their products in relatable ways. Instead of traditional ads, they benefit from real-world examples and marketing materials tailored to niche audiences.
This personal, relatable approach gets results, which is why affiliate marketing has grown into a booming industry.
Whether you’re just starting out or looking to grow an established platform, affiliate marketing is a powerful, versatile income stream that adapts to your goals and your audience.
How does affiliate marketing work?
By now, you know that you earn commissions when people buy through your unique affiliate link, but how exactly does this process work behind the scenes? Let’s break it down step by step.
1. Sign Up as an Affiliate
The first step is to join an affiliate program, either through a large affiliate network or directly with a company offering products or services you want to promote. Programs like Amazon Associates are fairly open, allowing most people to join as long as they meet a sales requirement within a specific timeframe. Others may require an application and approval process to ensure you’re a good fit for their brand.
2. Share Your Link
Once approved, you’ll receive a unique affiliate link (or sometimes a coupon code) that tracks the referrals and sales made through your promotions. This link is your key to earning commissions. It’s how companies know to credit you for the sales you generate. Once you’ve joined, you’re ready to start sharing your recommendations with your audience and turning those referrals into income.
3. Tracking Your Referrals
Affiliate links work by storing a small file, called a “cookie,” in the browser of anyone who clicks on your link. This cookie contains information such as your affiliate ID and helps track purchases or other actions taken by the customer, such as signing up for an email list or creating an account.
The length of time this cookie stays active depends on the affiliate program, often referred to as the cookie duration. Some programs, like Amazon, have shorter durations (24 hours), while others may last 30 days or even longer. A longer cookie duration increases your chances of earning commissions, as customers may need time to consider a purchase.
4. Earning Commissions
Your commissions depend on the program and the action required to generate them. Some programs pay you a percentage of the sale price, others pay a fixed amount per purchase, and some even pay per lead (like when someone signs up for a free trial or email list).
For example, let’s say you promote an at-home fitness app. If the program pays $15 per signup and five people register through your link, you earn $75. Alternatively, if you’re promoting fitness equipment with a 10% commission and someone buys a $700 treadmill, you’d earn $70 from that sale.
5. Payments
Once a purchase or action is completed, the affiliate program tracks the sale and credits your account. Payments are typically made on a schedule (monthly or quarterly) and are sent through methods like PayPal, direct deposit, or check. Some programs have minimum payout thresholds, so you’ll need to meet those before receiving your earnings.
How much money can you make with affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing can be a significant income stream, but it’s important to set realistic expectations, especially if you’re just getting started.
While it’s possible to see big numbers, it often takes time, strategy, and effort to get there. Some people only ever earn a few dollars a month, while others scale their affiliate income into six or even seven figures.
The biggest factors that influence how much you can make include the:
- Size of your audience
- Trust you’ve built with them
- Niche you’re in
- The products or services you promote
Keep in mind, it’s not just about having the biggest audience. Some of my clients have smaller audiences than others, but because their audience is highly engaged and trust their recommendations, they often earn more than creators with much larger followings. Engagement and trust matter far more than sheer numbers when it comes to affiliate marketing.
By focusing on building genuine connections with your audience and promoting products or services you truly believe in, you can create a steady and scalable income stream over time.
You’ll go places when you stop thinking about affiliate marketing as a get-rich-quick-scheme and think of affiliate marketing as a long-term strategy to serve your audience while growing your income.
Success comes from delivering value, earning trust, and consistently showing up with recommendations that genuinely help your readers. When you approach affiliate marketing with patience and purpose, the results will follow.
How to start affiliate marketing as a beginner (step-by-step)
If you’re new to affiliate marketing, follow these simple steps to set yourself up for success. Here are the top things you should do to start building a profitable affiliate marketing strategy:
1. Choose a niche and understand your audience
To succeed online, you need to “pick a niche”, or a specific area of focus that aligns with your interests and expertise. Think of it as the category you want to be known for—your specialty.
By choosing a more targeted affiliate niche, you make it easier to stand out because you’re not trying to talk to everyone—you’re connecting with the people who are truly interested in what you have to say.
Instead of choosing a broad niche like “fitness” or “travel,” narrow it down to something like “at-home fitness for women over 40” or “budget-friendly travel tips for families with young kids.” Being specific helps you connect with the right people, making your content more valuable and targeted.
Your niche isn’t just about the content you create; it also needs to serve a specific type of client.
It’s also vital to understand your audience’s pain points, challenges, and fears. What problems do they face, and how can your recommendations make their lives easier or better? When you know these details, it becomes much easier to put the right affiliate products in front of them. You know, products they’ll genuinely appreciate and be more likely to purchase.
If you need some help defining who you want to serve, check out this post: How to Identify Your Ideal Client in 4 Easy Steps + FREE Worksheet. This resource will guide you through the process of understanding your audience so you can create content and recommendations that truly resonate with them.
Remember:
- Building authority in your niche takes time. Choose something you’ll enjoy creating content for long-term, even if the results take months to show.
- Don’t be afraid to start small. Your niche can evolve as you grow. Many successful affiliate marketers began with one focus and expanded as they learned more about their audience.
2. Build an affiliate website
It’s absolutely possible to start affiliate marketing without a website—many creators use social media platforms like Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook to share affiliate links.
However, I firmly believe that every creator and influencer should have their own website. Why? Because a website gives you complete control over your content creation, branding, and audience experience. It’s a central hub where you can house all your content, products, and offers.
Unlike social media platforms, which are subject to algorithm changes or account restrictions, a self-hosted website is a space you own. It’s the foundation of a long-term, sustainable online presence and an essential tool for building authority and trust in your niche.
Having a website also opens up more opportunities for monetization and audience engagement. Whether it’s through blog posts, lead magnets, or email list building, your website allows you to connect with your audience in ways that social media alone can’t.
If you’re serious about affiliate marketing—or any type of online business—a website is a must-have investment in your success.

3. Research and join the right affiliate programs
The next step is to research and apply for the best products that align with your audience’s needs. This step ensures you’re promoting high-quality products that genuinely resonate with your readers, helping you build trust and drive conversions.
So, how do you find affiliate programs worth joining? Here are my top recommendations:
Check With Companies You Already Love and Trust
Make a list of the products or services you already use and rave about and that would be helpful if you shared it with your audience too!
Many companies offer affiliate programs, and promoting something you genuinely believe in makes your recommendations feel natural and authentic.
For example, I build websites with KadenceWP and recommend it to my DIY students and custom clients all the time. Because I already knew it was a great product, joining their affiliate program was an easy decision and linking it in various posts on pages was natural.
So, what products or services do you love? Maybe it’s a meal prep service, a piece of software, or even workout gear.
Check the footer of the company’s website to see if they have an affiliate program, or do a quick Google search for “[company name] + affiliate program.”
Search for Programs in Your Niche
Start with the products or services you already use and rave about!
Another great way to find affiliate programs is to search for “affiliate programs for [your niche]” on Google. This will usually pull up lists of programs that are relevant to your area of expertise.
For example, if you’re in the fitness niche, a search for “affiliate programs for fitness and health” may reveal programs for fitness apps, resistance bands, health food companies or healthy meal delivery services. It’s a quick and easy way to discover programs you might not have considered before.
Join an Affiliate Network
If you’re looking for even more options, consider joining an affiliate network.
An affiliate network is a platform that connects businesses (called merchants) with affiliates (like you) who want to promote their products or services. Think of it as a matchmaking service for affiliate marketing.
Merchants list their affiliate programs on the network, complete with commission rates, cookie durations, and program requirements. As an affiliate, you can browse these programs, apply to the ones that fit your niche, and start promoting once approved.
The great thing about affiliate networks is that they handle all the behind-the-scenes work for you, like tracking clicks and sales through your affiliate links, ensuring you get credit for your referrals, and processing commission payments.
Some of the most popular affiliate networks include:
- ShareASale: A favorite for its variety of merchants, from small businesses to big brands.
- CJ Affiliate: Known for its global reach and reputable merchants.
- Impact: Offers premium brands and advanced tracking tools.
- FlexOffers: Features a wide range of merchants and is great for beginners.
- Rakuten Advertising: Focuses on industries like fashion, electronics, and travel.
Joining an affiliate network simplifies the process, especially if you’re just starting out. With thousands of programs available in one place, it’s easier to find products that align with your niche and audience. Plus, the network handles most of the technical details, so you can focus on what matters most—creating content and building connections with your readers.
4. Keep track of your links
Affiliate links are often long, messy, and, let’s face it, impossible to remember. Once you start joining multiple programs, it can quickly become overwhelming. That’s why I highly recommend setting up a system to stay organized from the start.
Use a spreadsheet
At the very least, use a spreadsheet to track your links. Include details like the program name, the product you’re promoting, the full affiliate URL, and any important notes (like commission rates or cookie durations).
Alternatively, you can use some kind of task management system to keep track of it all too. I personally use SmartSuite, but you could use something like Trello, or ClickUp. Whatever works for you!
Having everything in one place makes it a breeze to grab the right link when you’re creating new content or updating existing posts.
Create cloaked links
Want to take it a step further? Use a plugin with redirect capabilities, like RankMath or PrettyLinks, or ThirstyAffiliates, to create shorter, branded links that look professional and are easy to remember and share.
For example, instead of sharing a clunky URL like https://stellarwp.pxf.io/c/2092834/1287862/9639, I like to create a clean, professional-looking link like https://diydreamsite.com/get/kadence instead.
Branded links not only look better but are also a lifesaver if an affiliate program ever changes its URLs. Rather than combing through dozens (or hundreds!) of posts to update your links, you can simply update the redirect in one spot, and you’re all set.
Staying on top of your links might not sound glamorous, but it’s a small step that makes a big difference in the long run. Plus, it lets you focus on the fun part—creating content and serving your audience!
Caution: Before setting up redirections, it’s important to review the guidelines for each affiliate program. Some programs, like Amazon Associates, explicitly forbid link cloaking. Always double-check the rules to ensure you’re in compliance and avoid jeopardizing your affiliate partnerships.
5. Create High-Quality Content That Converts
This is the meat and potatoes of being a successful affiliate marketer!
It’s not enough to create random content and sprinkle affiliate links throughout your post or sidebar. If you want to boost your affiliate revenue, your content needs to be intentional and speak directly to your target audience’s needs.
Think about it—your audience is likely made up of people who are already considering a product or service but haven’t quite made up their minds yet. They’re searching for product reviews, comparison posts, or “best of” lists to help them decide if something is worth their time and money.
Sometimes, they might not even know what product will solve their problem—they’re just looking for guidance. That’s where you come in!
As an affiliate marketer, your job is to bridge the gap, helping them discover the right product for their specific needs.
To do this effectively, create high-quality content that:
- Answers questions: Think FAQs, tutorials, or how-to guides. Example: How To Choose The Best WordPress Web Host
- Compares options: Offer side-by-side comparisons of products or services in your niche. Example: SureCart vs WooCommerce – Which Is The Best eCommerce Plugin For WordPress?
- Provides honest reviews: Share your genuine experiences with the products or services you’re promoting. Example: Kadence Theme Review: Is It The Best WordPress Theme For You?
- Lists top recommendations: Create curated lists like “Top 10 Budget-Friendly Travel Gadgets” or “5 Best Apps for New Parents.” These roundup-style posts are perfect for helping readers explore their options in a straightforward way. Here’s an example: Where To Find The Best Kadence Child Themes & Kadence Block Templates
Articles that target investigational intent keywords—like “best running shoes for beginners” or “top email marketing tools for small businesses”—are especially effective. These are the search terms your audience is using while researching their options.
Pro Tip: Before writing, think about what your audience is likely Googling. What questions are they asking? What problems are they trying to solve? Then, tailor your content to meet them exactly where they are in their decision-making process.
By producing content that genuinely helps your readers, you’re not only building trust but also increasing the likelihood they’ll click your affiliate links and make a purchase.
6. Strategically place your links
Where you place your affiliate links matters—a lot.
If your links are tucked away at the bottom of your content, they’ll rarely get clicked, but if you overwhelm readers by stuffing links into every other sentence, your post will come across as spammy.
The key is to find the right balance and place your links where they make the most sense.
Add Links Where Readers Are Ready to Act
Think about the flow of your content. Readers are more likely to click a link after they’ve had time to understand why the product is valuable or how it solves their problem.
For example, a link makes sense after:
- A compelling product review
- A comparison post
- A specific recommendation
By placing your links where readers are already engaged, you make it easy for them to take the next step without interrupting their experience.
Provide Clear Context
Affiliate links without explanation can feel random and untrustworthy. That’s why it’s important to give your affiliate links context. Show your audience why you’re recommending a product and how it can help them.
Instead of saying:
“Looking for a budgeting app? [affiliate link]”
Say this:
“If you’re trying to save money, apps like [Product Name 1], [Product Name 2], and [Product Name 3] can help you track your spending and stick to your goals. I’ve personally used [Product Name 1] for over two years, and it’s been a game-changer for keeping my budget on track.”
The second approach feels genuine, helpful, and encourages readers to explore the links naturally. It’s not just about adding a link—it’s about showing why the product is worth their attention.
Use Visual Callouts to Grab Attention
Make your links stand out in a visually appealing way. Tools like buttons, tables, and boxes can help guide readers to your affiliate links while making your content more skimmable.
Examples:
- Buttons: Include calls to action like “Check Price on Amazon” or “Get the Details Here.”
- Tables: Create comparison tables that outline features, prices, and links to the products.
- Highlight Boxes: Use a featured box to showcase your top pick, with a brief description and an affiliate link.
Visual callouts (like this one) not only grab attention but also provide readers with the information they need at a glance. (You’ve probably noticed a few other styles that I’ve used throughout this post!)
Test Your Links Regularly
There’s nothing worse than a broken affiliate link. Not only can it cost you potential sales, but it can also make your content look outdated or unprofessional—two things we definitely want to avoid.
Make it a habit to check your affiliate links regularly to ensure they’re working properly and directing readers to the right products or pages.
I personally use the RankMath plugin, which has a built-in 404 Monitor. This feature makes it easy to spot when a link is broken so I can fix or redirect it in just a few clicks.
If you’re unsure how to get started, check out this tutorial: How to Find and Fix Broken Links in WordPress.
By testing your links consistently and keeping them up to date, you’ll not only boost your credibility but also ensure your affiliate strategy continues to deliver results. Combine this with thoughtful placement, and you’ll create a seamless experience that builds trust while driving clicks.
7. Promote your content like a pro
Creating high-quality content is essential, but it’s only half the battle. To truly succeed in affiliate marketing, you need to ensure your content gets seen by the right audience. After all, even the best recommendations won’t drive sales if no one knows they exist.
Here’s a quick overview of how to promote your content like a pro (even as a beginner):
Optimize for SEO
SEO (search engine optimization) is how your content gets discovered on platforms like Google, Bing and Duck Duck Go. When done right, it can bring steady traffic to your blog for months or even years to come!
Why it helps: People are already searching for answers—like “best budgeting apps” or “top tools for beginner photographers.” By optimizing your content with the right keywords, you help your post show up when they search.
How to dive deeper: I’ve got a few resources to share.
- For beginners, a tool like RankIQ makes finding the best keywords a breeze, giving you a clear roadmap to optimize your posts.
- Brandon Gaille, the creator of RankIQ, also has an amazing free podcast, called The Blogging Millionaire packed with bite-sized, practical SEO tips that are super easy to understand and implement. Brandon was my first SEO mentor and cannot recommend his work enough. He knows his stuff!
- If you’d rather learn the ins and outs of SEO specifically for bloggers through a step-by-step course, I highly recommend Mike Futia’s Stupid Simple SEO course. Mike is very thorough, catering to both beginners and advanced bloggers.
Pinterest is a unique hybrid—it’s a search engine that uses visual graphics and photos to display results, but it also functions like a social media platform by curating your feed with more ideas based on what you’ve interacted with. This means it’s both a powerful tool for discovery and a great way to engage with your audience visually.
Why it helps: Pinterest users are often in discovery or decision-making mode, actively searching for solutions, ideas, or products. Unlike social media posts that quickly fade, pins can live on indefinitely, consistently driving traffic to your site. Plus, Pinterest users are action-oriented, making it an ideal platform for affiliate marketing.
How to dive deeper:
- You can start by creating beautiful pins with tools like Canva and adding keyword-rich descriptions.
- You can use a Pinterest scheduling tool like Tailwind to help you save time by automating this process.
- If you want to learn how to use Pinterest to grow your blog traffic, I highly recommend checking out Carly Bell’s Pinteresting Strategies course. It’s super affordable and packed with actionable tips.
Use Email Marketing
Email marketing is another powerful tool for promoting your affiliate links. Why? Because the people on your email list have already said, “I trust you.” They value your insights and recommendations, which makes email the perfect place to share helpful resources, tips, and products.
Why it helps: Email gives you a direct line of communication to your audience. Unlike social media algorithms, where your post might get buried, email ensures your message lands right in their inbox. Plus, it allows for a more personal connection, which can lead to higher engagement and trust.
How to dive deeper:
Start with a beginner-friendly email marketing platform like Kit (formerly ConvertKit), which makes it easy to create email sequences and tag your subscribers for more personalized content.
If you want to master the art of email marketing as a beginner blogger, check out Tracie Fobes’ course, Email Success Blueprint. It’s packed with opt-in ideas, newsletter planner, welcome series swipe files and more to help you write emails that connect with your audience and drive results.
Email marketing might feel intimidating at first, but it’s one of the most impactful ways to build a loyal audience and boost your affiliate income over time!
Another way to get your affiliate links in front of your audience is by promoting your content on social media. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Twitter allow you to meet your audience where they already are while showcasing your content in engaging and creative ways.
Why it helps: Social media is a great place to build connections, start conversations, and drive traffic back to your blog or directly to your affiliate links. Plus, with features like stories, reels, and live streams, you can highlight products in action and add a personal touch to your recommendations.
How to dive deeper:
If you’re just getting started, focus on the platform your audience uses most. Use tools like Canva to design professional posts and a tool like Later to schedule your content in advance. The IvoryMix membership also includes content planner templates, canva templates and video trainings about how to effectively use social media.
Create YouTube videos
YouTube is not just a platform for entertainment—it’s the second-largest search engine in the world. That means your videos have the potential to reach a massive audience, especially if you create content like tutorials, reviews, or comparison videos that answer questions people are actively searching for.
Why it helps:
Video builds trust in a way that other content formats can’t. When viewers can see your face, hear your voice, and watch you demonstrate or talk about a product, it feels personal and authentic. Plus, YouTube channels can continue to drive traffic and affiliate clicks long after they’re published, making them a powerful long-term strategy.
How to dive deeper:
You don’t need fancy equipment to get started. Use your phone camera and free tools like Canva to design eye-catching thumbnails. If you’re going to create tutorials showing your screen, I personally use and recommend Camtasia.
In your video, make sure to mention the affiliate product naturally and include your affiliate links in the description with a clear call to action like, “Check out [Product Name] using the link below!”
If you want to master YouTube and learn how to create videos that rank and drive traffic, I highly recommend signup up for Meredith Marsh’s course: 30 Days To A Thriving YouTube Channel. It’s perfect for beginners and packed with actionable strategies to help you grow your channel and turn videos into an affiliate income powerhouse.
8. Track Your Performance
To grow your affiliate marketing income, you need to know what’s working—and what’s not.
Tracking your performance helps you identify which links, products, or strategies are driving clicks and conversions so you can double down on what’s effective and tweak what isn’t.
Here are a few ways to stay on top of your affiliate marketing performance:
Use Analytics Tools: Many affiliate programs provide a dashboard where you can see how your links are performing—things like clicks, sales, and commissions earned. Make it a habit to review these metrics regularly.
Track Clicks with Plugins: If you’re using plugins like PrettyLinks or ThirstyAffiliates to cloak your links, these tools often include built-in analytics. They can show you which links are getting the most clicks, giving you deeper insights into what’s catching your audience’s attention.
Pay Attention to Your Content: Look at your website analytics (e.g., Google Analytics) to see which blog posts are getting the most traffic and where people are clicking within those posts. If a particular type of content performs well, consider creating more of it.
Set Goals: Whether it’s earning a specific monthly commission, increasing click-through rates, or optimizing your top-performing posts, setting measurable goals gives you a clear focus and direction for your efforts.
Test and Optimize: Experiment with different placements for your affiliate links, try new callouts like buttons or tables, or tweak your email subject lines. Small changes can lead to big improvements in your results.
By tracking your performance, you’ll not only gain valuable insights but also build a strategy that helps you grow your affiliate income over time. Think of it as working smarter, not harder!
Wrap-Up: Start Small and Stay Consistent
I hope by now you can see that affiliate marketing is a great way to serve your audience while creating a sustainable income. Success comes from choosing products you genuinely believe in, creating valuable content, and building trust with your readers.
Start with one or two strategies from this guide, take action, and track your progress. Affiliate marketing isn’t about quick wins—it’s about consistency and care. Over time, those small steps can lead to meaningful results.
