You just made edits to your website, but when you refresh the page, nothing looks different. Before you panic, it’s usually a cache issue.
Cache (pronounced “cash”) is temporary storage that helps websites and apps load faster. It speeds things up, but it can also cause headaches when you update your site. Instead of showing the new version, your browser or server might still be pulling an old copy.
If your website isn’t updating, here’s how you can clear cache step by step.
What Is Website Cache?
A website cache is like short-term memory for your site. It stores files so your site loads quickly. You’ll run into cache in a few places:
- Browser cache saves things like images and scripts on your device
- Plugin cache comes from caching plugins in WordPress
- Server cache is controlled by your hosting provider
- Mobile cache saves site data on your phone
The problem is that when you make changes, cached files may keep showing the old version instead of the updated one.
How to Clear Cache and See Website Updates
1. Clear Your Browser Cache
If you’re on a computer, start here.
In Google Chrome:
- Open Chrome
- Click the three-dot menu in the top right
- Go to More Tools > Clear browsing data
- Choose a time range (select All Time for a full reset)
- Check “Cached images and files”
- Click Clear data
For Safari, Firefox, or Edge, check their support pages for steps.
Refresh your website to see if your edits show up.
2. Clear Your Plugin Cache (WordPress)
If you use WordPress, you may have a caching plugin running.
- Log in to your WordPress dashboard
- Go to Plugins
- Look for plugins with “cache” in the name
- Open the plugin settings
- Click Clear or Purge Cache
You can turn the plugin off too, but clearing it in the settings is the safer way to go.
3. Clear Your Server Cache
Some web hosts turn on server caching automatically. If you’re still not seeing updates, check here.
- Log in to your hosting account and look for a Clear Cache button
- If you don’t see one, reach out to your host’s support team
- Ask if server-side caching is enabled and have them clear it
This is a common reason why site changes don’t show up right away.
4. Clear Cache on iPhone (or Mobile)
If you’re checking your site on your phone, your browser may be the culprit.
For Safari on iPhone:
- Open Settings
- Tap Safari
- Select Clear History and Website Data
For Android, head into your browser settings and clear browsing data.
Why Clearing Cache Matters
Clearing cache makes sure you and your visitors see the latest version of your site. Without it, you may think your edits didn’t save when really the old version is just stuck in memory.
If you ever wonder, “Why is my website not updating?” or “How do I clear my WordPress cache?” these steps will usually fix the problem.
Final Tips
- Start with your browser cache
- Check your WordPress caching plugins
- Contact your host about server caching
- Clear cache on your phone if needed
Once you’ve cleared it in these places, your updates should show up.
